Duck Eggs in my backyard

Duck Eggs in my backyard

Wow! I have now found 2 duck eggs in my backyard. Or course they were found where I don’t very often weed. One was by the compost bin, and the other by my fence where I hadn’t weeded for a few weeks.

This is the first year that I had eggs. Wonder what is different this year? I did put out a bird feeder, but it’s for the little birds, mostly finches, wrens and some cardinals. We did get alot more rain this summer. I live about 1 mile from the Des Plaines River, by why would they wander over here?  On one hand I feel that my efforts in the last 7 years to bring my yard back into harmony with nature by using all natural and organic methods has been recognized by a duck planting its eggs in my yard.

I did a search on the internet, and it seems there there are quite a few more eggs being found in backyards this year.

The egg is grayish and a little larger than the store bought chicken eggs. Found this great picture on the internet comparing duck egg to chicken egg.
